Watercolor Painting & Illustrator

Above is a recent Watercolour study, as design business is slow I’m brushing up on my art a bit. I’ve found that some watercolour techniques transpose carry over surprisingly well digitally. Using various brush imitating shapes and Illustrator’s blend command art brush can be created that mimic some watercolour techniques.

This brush library can quickly create a simple watercolour forest and grass. The brushes contain the basic shapes of upward watercolour brush strokes, they are created using blended shapes and different transparency modes. Also included are the large background trees shapes and grass brushes. These background shapes must be laid down first because the other brushes use blending modes and need a background color. Then the blended brushes are layered in on top on to produce the desired effect. The limitation is that it doesn’t work on white backgrounds. Some tweaking is required to produce the desired effect.
